Choosing a professional to supervise and manage your interior painting project is a great first step. Now it’s time to find the right contractor.

If this isn’t your first home improvement project, then you likely already know that going with the first contractor you find doesn’t always mean your project is going to turn out right.

Always get quotes from at least three contractors, and don’t go with the cheapest option, even if you are on a budget. Many contractors offer financing if it’s needed. You can visit this article for more guidance.

That being said, when you’re requesting a quote, you can’t just say, “I need painting done—how much will it cost?” That’s like going to the doctor and saying, “I’m in pain—tell me what’s causing it.” More details are needed to ensure what’s being provided to you is accurate.

So, when you’re requesting quotes from potential contractors, here’s what you need to provide:

Number of Rooms Being Painted

More rooms require more preparation work, including moving or covering furniture. It’s also important for the contractor to know the location of each room. Are they next to each other? Are two rooms upstairs while one is downstairs? This information helps them understand the amount of preparation work and planning needed for the project. It will also help inform their timeline estimate.

Size of Rooms

If you don’t know the size of your rooms, don’t sweat it. Many homeowners don’t. Start by measuring the length and width of each room with a tape measure, and then multiply those two numbers together.

So, if you’ve measured a room that’s 6 feet wide and 12 feet long, the total square footage is 72 sq ft.

A rough estimate is better than no estimate, so do your best.

What Is Being Painted

Is the entire room, including the walls and ceilings, being painted? Do you only need trim work done? This helps the painting contractor know which type of paint to use, as walls and ceilings may require different types depending on their textures.

Is There Water Damage?

You can’t paint over water damage. If you notice mold spots, soft areas, or sagging, let the contractor know. Some contractors may offer remediation or repair services, while others may offer referrals. Either way, you’ll have to get the damage fixed before the painting project can begin.

Desired Color

The exact color you want won’t affect the cost of your paint job, since paint prices aren’t influenced by color. However, if color matching is required — whether it’s repainting a room to match the color of another existing room —it requires more prep work and research.

Whether Interior Decoration Assistance Is Needed

If you know you want to refresh a room (or multiple rooms), but you don’t really know where to start, some painting contractors may offer design consultations to help you find colors, furniture, lighting fixtures, and more. These consultations may be an add-on price or included with the painting service, but the contractor still needs to be aware that it’s needed so it can be included in the quote.
